The basic test covers what matters most
Hardness
Calcium and magnesium in grains per gallon. Tells us whether a softener makes sense and what size.
Iron
The usual cause of orange staining. We check the level and whether it is dissolved or already oxidized, which changes the treatment.
Total dissolved solids (TDS)
An overall measure of what is dissolved in the water. Useful for judging drinking-water taste and reverse osmosis performance.
pH
Acidic water can corrode plumbing and affect how other treatment works. We flag anything outside the normal range.
Chlorine
For municipal water. Chlorine is what most people taste and smell, and it is easy to reduce with carbon filtration.
Manganese, where applicable
Often travels with iron on well water and causes black or dark staining. Tested when the source or symptoms suggest it.
Bacteria (well owners)
Bacteria is not part of the free in-store test. We stock test kits and can point you to the public health lab for coliform and E. coli testing, and we install UV disinfection when needed.
What to bring
- A clean 500 ml sample in a clean bottle. A rinsed water bottle is fine; avoid juice or pop bottles.
- Run the cold tap for two to three minutes before filling, so we test the water, not what sat in the pipe.
- If you already have treatment, bring one sample from before it and one from after if you can. Label them.
- Bring the sample in within 24 hours. No appointment needed during store hours.

Water testing FAQs
Is the water test really free?
Yes. The basic in-store test (hardness, iron, TDS, pH and chlorine) is free, with no obligation. Extended lab-style packages, for example for bacteria or a full well profile, are available at a cost and we will tell you the price up front.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in with your sample during store hours. If you would rather have a set time, use the form on this page and we will confirm.
Can you test well water?
Yes. Well water is common across Halton Hills and testing it is a big part of what we do. For bacteria, we stock test kits and can direct you to the public health laboratory, since coliform testing needs a lab.
Do you test in my home?
When a job calls for it, our technician tests on site as part of a service visit. For a first look, the in-store test is the quickest and it is free.
