Sediment and cloudy water

Sand, silt or rust in the water, clogged aerators and cloudy glasses. A sediment filter at the point of entry catches it and protects everything downstream.

Symptoms

  • Grit or particles in the water
  • Cloudy or milky water
  • Clogged aerators, showerheads and appliance screens
  • Pressure that drops between filter changes
  • Rust particles after plumbing work or hydrant flushing

Common causes

  • Sand, silt or clay from the well or a worn well screen
  • Rust from old galvanized plumbing
  • Municipal main repairs and hydrant flushing
  • A well pump set too close to the bottom

How we treat it

  1. Identify the sediment

    Type and amount decide the filter.

  2. Sediment filter housing

    Right micron rating at the point of entry.

  3. Backwashing or spin-down filter

    For heavy or continuous sediment.

  4. Protect downstream equipment

    Installed ahead of softeners and UV.

Sediment is sand, silt, clay or rust particles carried in with the water. On wells it can mean a worn screen, a low water level or a pump drawing from near the bottom. On municipal water it usually follows main repairs or hydrant flushing. Either way it wears out valves, clogs aerators and showerheads, and can foul softeners and UV systems.

A sediment filter housing with the correct micron cartridge at the point of entry catches it before it reaches the house. Heavy or fine sediment may call for a backwashing sediment filter or a spin-down pre-filter. If cloudiness is actually air (it clears from the bottom of a glass upward) the fix is different, and we will tell you.
