Tannins or tea-coloured water

Yellow or tea-tinted water that does not settle or clear. Usually tannins from organic matter, and they need a specific resin system rather than a standard filter.

Symptoms

  • Yellow, tan or tea-coloured water

Common causes

  • Organic matter from peat, marsh and vegetation around the well
  • Shallow wells and wells near wetlands or wooded low ground
  • Seasonal changes after heavy rain or snowmelt

How we treat it

    A specialized anion exchange unit removes the colour.

Tannins are organic compounds released as water passes through peat, decaying vegetation and swampy ground. They give water a yellow to tea colour, sometimes a musty taste, and they stain laundry and fixtures. Unlike iron, the colour does not settle out if you let a glass stand, and a standard sediment or carbon filter does not remove it.

Tannins are treated with a specialized anion resin system. Because tannin water often carries iron and hardness as well, we test for all three and install treatment in an order that protects the tannin resin, usually iron filtration first, then softening, then the tannin unit.
